GurtOS

An operating system where AI agents work safely: real access, never your keys.

Every task runs as its own Linux user, in its own copy of your files, and reaches only the hosts it needs. You can undo any one task, approve its spending from your phone, and pull the plug without losing work.

Watch itThe four momentsSponsor tracksProduct docsCode

A pause for your OK. A task asks to spend $15.00 on a $10.00 budget; the request lands on the box screen and the phone at once, Approve on the phone clears it from the box screen too, and the task carries on. Real app, scripted task, test money. Silent screen recording, 16.8 seconds.

Proof, in numbers

175 checks, 0 failed
The merge gate on Oct 24: the four moments, then every app, on a fresh box on an x86 test VM. 7 paid live calls skipped, run separately.
14 of 14
Planted finance errors caught by the credit desk, a Droid and Claude agent, with 0 false alarms and all 6 credit decisions right.
0 keys
Reached a real agent's task. 240 process samples of a running Droid task held only a placeholder key.
No step twice
After a hard kill, the box came back, resumed the long job where it was, and kept the approval waiting.

Why it needs to exist

1 click

On a crafted link made OpenClaw connect to an attacker and send its token. CVE-2026-25253 (NVD), fixed in 2026.1.29.

Ben already runs agents unattended on an always-on Linux box at home: a job-application pipeline that fills forms every 15 minutes, watchers on timers, bots that buzz his phone. Every one of them runs as him, with his keys and his files. There is no way to undo one job and keep the rest, no budget that pauses before spending, and after a power cut he checks by hand what broke. GurtOS is the computer he wanted for that work.

The four moments

Each one runs live at the table, and each one is a section of the merge gate, ./demo, which every change must pass before it merges.

Moment 1

Undo one task

Each task runs as its own Linux user, in its own copy of the files. Undo takes out one task's changes and leaves every other task's work in place, outside git.

What the merge gate checked
moment 1: undo one task
ok two tasks ran at the same time
ok each ran as its own Linux user (box-tlyluznabd0, box-tlylv46e861)
ok neither saw the other's changes while running (A: no b.txt, B: original a.txt)
ok the workspace shows both tasks' changes
ok A's diff, from its own layer: modified a.txt, added done-a.txt, added who-a.txt
  ok undo removed A's changes
  ok B's changes are untouched
ok no task ever wrote to the original files
Undo one task. A task deleted notes.md by mistake; Undo takes out only that task's layer, notes.md comes back, and Time Machine shows the other two tasks' changes still in place. Real app, scripted tasks, sped up 1.3 times. Silent screen recording, 30.5 seconds.

Moment 2

The booby-trapped page

An agent reads a page with hidden instructions to steal keys. There are none to steal: the vault is root only, and the task's network reaches only its allowed host. The attempt is blocked, logged, and the task undone.

What the merge gate checked
moment 2: the booby-trapped page
ok the agent read the page with the hidden instructions (its one allowed host)
ok it could not read the vault: root only
ok no secret anywhere in its environment or files
ok sending to attacker.example was blocked, and the log has it
ok going around the proxy was blocked by the firewall (blocked: ECONNREFUSED)
ok it could not reach SpacetimeDB or the box's API to approve itself, directly or through its allowed name
ok it could see no process but its own: not the box, not other tasks
ok the task is undone; nothing it wrote is left
ok no vault secret in the agent's files, environment or log, whatever it did
ok the agent refused the hidden instructions; nothing left the box
The booby-trapped page. A task allowed to reach only example.com reads the page, then tries attacker.example and a raw IP address; the box refuses both, raises a red banner and marks the blocked steps in the task's log. Real app, scripted agent acting out the hijack. Silent screen recording, 28.1 seconds.

Moment 3

A pause for your OK

A task that wants to spend over its budget stops and asks. The request reaches the box screen and your phone live, other tasks keep running, and the first answer wins.

What the merge gate checked
moment 3: a pause for your OK
ok P stopped over budget, and SpacetimeDB shows it live: "Spend $8.00 to Test Vendor on example.spend (test spend on a GPU hour)? Budget $5.00, spent $0.00."
ok another task kept running and finished while P waited
ok the portal's inbox lists it too (GET /api/approvals?state=pending)
ok the request carries the amount ($8.00), payee and purpose, so the phone can fill its rows
ok the OK from the phone came back through SpacetimeDB into the log
ok P carried on, spent $8.00 (test money) and finished
ok SpacetimeDB shows it done live, with its cost and last step
ok only one of the two parallel $0.60 payments went through: $0.60 spent, not $1.20 (atomic budget)
A pause for your OK. A task asks to spend $15.00 on a $10.00 budget; the request lands on the box screen and the phone at once, Approve on the phone clears it from the box screen too, and the task carries on. Real app, scripted task, test money. Silent screen recording, 16.8 seconds.

Moment 4

Pull the plug

Hard-kill the box mid-task. It boots, rebuilds every task from its append-only log, and resumes each one where it stopped: no step done twice, none skipped, approvals still waiting.

What the merge gate checked
moment 4: pull the plug
ok the box is down hard: no processes, no mounts, a torn last line
ok the box came back and picked up the long job (running)
ok the long job carried on from where it was: no step done twice, none skipped
ok the deploy is still waiting for its OK, live in SpacetimeDB
ok approved after the restart, it finished
ok earlier work survived too: B kept, A still undone
Pull the plug. The box and every task process are killed at once; the screen says the box is out of reach, it boots on the same data, and opens on Welcome back with the three tasks that resumed and nothing paid twice. Real app, scripted tasks. Silent screen recording, 30.5 seconds.

How it works

Architecture Your devices reach the box service's API. The box service runs as root and holds the API, the action log, the apps, the vault, a broker for each task and the network proxy. SpacetimeDB mirrors live state. Each task runs as its own Linux user and reaches the core only through its broker socket and the outside world only through the proxy. Portal in a browser The box's screen Phone HTTP API and live updates The box: one machine The core: the box service, runs as root API 127.0.0.1:7700 Action log append-only, fsynced Apps tools, triggers, routes Vault root only Broker one socket per task Proxy each task's allowed hosts mirrors live state SpacetimeDB tasks, approvals port 3000 Tasks: each its own Linux user Task A own copy of the files no keys Task B own copy of the files no keys Unix socket network Outside APIs tools call with vault keys Allowed hosts and the model service
Your devices talk to the core's API. Each task runs as its own Linux user in its own copy of the files. It reaches the core only through its broker socket, and the internet only through the proxy. Tools that need a key run inside the core.

A task never holds a secret. The vault is a root-only file. A task asks its broker to run a tool by name; the tool runs inside the core, reads the keys it declared, and returns only the result. Droid's own model key is a placeholder that the proxy swaps for the real one on the way out.

The network is an allowlist per task. An nftables rule sends every task user's traffic to the box's proxy, which lets each task reach only the hosts in its spec. Every refusal is a net.blocked event in the log.

Undo is a layer. Each task writes to its own overlayfs layer. When it finishes, the layer goes on top of the workspace. Undo takes one layer out of the stack; the base files are never written.

The log is the truth. One append-only file, fsynced per line, holds every step, tool call, approval, cost and blocked connection. At boot the core rebuilds every task from it. SpacetimeDB mirrors live status and approvals to every screen.

Three editions

GurtOS ServerAn always-on box at home or in the cloud. Its screen is a home-server OS; it has no human login and no sudo. A bootable ISO installs it in about a minute and updates it as a whole, with automatic rollback.Built. The ISO is tested in QEMU on x86 (BIOS and UEFI) and ARM64; the box runs on x86 and ARM64 test VMs and a Vultr VM.
GurtOS PersonalYour own laptop. Ubuntu's GNOME desktop with your account and sudo. Agents work beside you as separate users on copies of your folders: approvals as notifications, a top-bar indicator, "Ask an Agent" on a folder in Files, then Keep or Undo.Built: the GNOME layer, tested on Ubuntu 24.04 with GNOME 46, and its own install ISO, tested in QEMU (an account made at first boot gets sudo and survives an update).
GurtOS BusinessOne box shared by a team, with roles for who may approve what and how much, routed approvals and per-person budgets.Planned. Approvals already record who answered.
The same approval on a phone: Spend $15.00 to Test Vendor, with Approve and Deny.
Server: the request on a phone, live.
GurtOS Personal: an approval as a GNOME notification, with the top-bar indicator counting running tasks.
Personal: the same kind of request as a GNOME notification.
GurtOS Personal: review a finished task's changes to a folder, with Undo and Keep.
Personal: a real Droid task fixed a thesis chapter. Nothing in the folder changed until Keep.

Cal Hacks prizes

  1. Overall

Judged on application, intentionality, functionality, creativity and technical complexity.

Every claim on this site is a check in the merge gate, a live run or a public link. The four moments run on a real box, live, at the table.

  2. Most Technically Advanced

    Deepest engineering.

The safety lives in the operating system, not in a prompt: a Linux user per task, an overlayfs layer per task, nftables rules per uid, a proxy that swaps in keys on the way out, systemd sandboxing, an fsynced append-only log that rebuilds every task after a hard kill, and a bootable image with A/B system slots that roll back by themselves.

  3. Most Creative

    Most original idea or combination.

A computer whose main users are agents. It is shaped like a home-server OS (wallpaper, widgets, an app grid, a dock), and its apps are approvals, undo and an activity monitor for agent work.

  4. Best Solo Hack

    Best project by one person.

One person, Ben Zhou. He ran parallel Claude Code agent threads, one per part, and each merged only after the full merge gate passed on a test VM. The core, 10 apps, the portal, the bootable image, the GNOME desktop layer, the docs site and this page came out of one weekend.

  5. Hacker's Choice

    Other hackers' favourite.

At the table: scan the QR code on the box's screen with your own phone, send the box a task, and approve its spending from your phone while the box screen shows the same request.

The box: users, layers, network rules, broker, vault, log, resume, SpacetimeDBLive on every test VM and the always-on boxes.
AgentsLive: Factory's Droid running Claude does the real tasks. The merge gate also uses a scripted worker so each check gives the same result every run, and pages say which one they show.
MoneyTest only: Stripe test mode with a Visa test card, USDC on Solana devnet, and a test spend tool that moves nothing.
CRS, Nessie, Apify, Jira, Elastic, Agentverse and ASI:One, Moss, ManaLive against each service (CRS and Nessie in their sandboxes, with test identities).
The business credit file in the credit desk, the household mailbox in the shopperSimulated: CRS has no business credit route, and the mailbox is a demo POP3 server with receipts we wrote.

The whole merge gate

./demo ships a checkout to a test VM, starts a fresh box with every app loaded, and runs the four moments and every app's demo step. Exit 0 is the only way to merge. This is the run from Oct 24 on the x86 test VM: 22 passed, 0 failed, 0 pending (102.0s), 175 checks passed.

ok undo on the purchase task refunded the order (re_sim_291570682005ac79)
ok supplies over x402: the task holds only the wallet tools, reaches only the seller, and may spend 3 cents
ok no card, signing key, mailbox password or Stripe key anywhere in the action log
skip live Best Buy watch, Stripe and Droid: run with DEMO_LIVE=shopper
track wallet
ok the box loaded wallet.quote and wallet.pay
ok the wallet refused a URL outside the task's hosts: "127.0.0.1:7700 is not one of this task's hosts"
ok the owner said no to "Spend $0.03 on wallet.pay? Budget $0.02, spent $0.00.", so the wallet never ran and nothing was spent
skip real payments on Solana devnet: DEMO_LIVE=wallet ./demo runs them
portal
ok portal/dist is built from the current portal/src and SpacetimeDB bindings (if not: cd portal && npm ci && npm run build)
ok the box serves GurtOS at / on the same address as its API
ok its script loads (193 KB with the SpacetimeDB client)
ok its 7 fonts and wallpapers come from the box, so the screen needs no internet
ok /screen, the box's own screen (the kiosk), loads the app too
ok /pair?code=TEST, where a phone lands after scanning, loads the app too
ok GET /api/health names the SpacetimeDB database the page subscribes to (box-demo-6281e8)
ok tasks, approvals and apps answer as lists
ok a task window has its steps and its diff
ok the action log streams over SSE, with each line's seq as its id
personal desktop layer
ok the notification service, the GurtOS app and the Files extension compile under the system Python
ok the live log the service follows gives each event an id to resume from
ok a task that stops for an OK becomes a notification with Approve and Deny (approval:tlynxxy980a.line1)
ok the top bar counts it: "4 need you"
ok Approve lets the task finish, the log says who answered (desktop:demo), and the notification closes
ok denied on the phone: the desktop closes its notification
ok Ask an Agent turns the owner's words, the folder and a $1.50 budget into a task
ok when it is done the folder is still untouched, and the service asks for a review
ok Keep (the review window's button) writes both changes into the real folder, and the review notification closes
ok the desktop layer's self-test ran to the end
demo: 22 passed, 0 failed, 0 pending (102.0s)

The core's code and its README say how each part works.

Known limits

  • Undo takes back a task's file changes. It cannot recall what a task already sent out through a tool, such as a payment; those are in the log for a person to follow up, and the shopper's undo refunds the order.
  • The bootable image is tested in QEMU (x86 with BIOS and UEFI, ARM64 emulated). It has not run on real Apple hardware, a real PC or Vultr's own ISO boot yet.
  • System slots are writable ext4 without dm-verity, and updates are signed with one key with no rotation.
  • Agents are Droid with Claude. Other agents would need a worker adapter in the core.
  • GurtOS Business is not built.
